Hello hello! I hope you had a good month. This October had quite a bit going on for me, in terms of work, life, and books. Let’s check it out!

October in General

October definitely hit me hard – but not with bad things! There was so much good that happened, but it also really burnt me out. I’m back to full-time and part-time work, and the anticipation of it all definitely got to me! But I am feeling better now. And leading up to that I got to take part in lots of fall festivities. From fall villages to birthday festivities and Halloween parties, there was lots of fun among all the chaos I seem to love.

Despite the return to a fuller schedule, I actually think the more regimented schedule will help a bit. But it definitely is a larger undertaking, so I’d like to simplify some things. Blogging and Bookstagram was a way for me to play with content creation, but now that I do marketing work at both my jobs, having the same structure for my hobby is a big undertaking. So instead of all the burnout cycles, I’m looking back on this blog as a hobby once again. I don’t want togo all in on planning things, but rather post when I feel. My ARC schedule in particular was causing a bit of stress, and while I’ve been enjoying them, scheduling my reading on top of everything else made it difficult to keep up. (Plus, most of my posts are ARC reviews at this point.) Instead, I want to take them on more infrequently and mix in more casual content. Although I’m hitting 3 years on this platform, it’s never too late to try something new!

Station Eternity

Station Eternity
Mur Lafferty
⭐⭐⭐

From idyllic small towns to claustrophobic urban landscapes, Mallory Viridian is constantly embroiled in murder cases that only she has the insight to solve. But outside of a classic mystery novel, being surrounded by death doesn’t make you a charming amateur detective, it makes you a suspect and a social pariah. So when Mallory gets the opportunity to take refuge on a sentient space station, she thinks she has the solution. Surely the murders will stop if her only company is alien beings. At first her new existence is peacefully quiet…and markedly devoid of homicide.

But when the station agrees to allow additional human guests, Mallory knows the break from her peculiar reality is over. After the first Earth shuttle arrives, and aliens and humans alike begin to die, the station is thrown into peril. Stuck smack-dab in the middle of an extraterrestrial whodunit, and wondering how in the world this keeps happening to her anyway, Mallory has to solve the crime—and fast—or the list of victims could grow to include everyone on board….

The Sunbearer Trials

I’m Glad My Mom Died
Jennette McCurdy
⭐⭐⭐⭐

A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants.

Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.

Lucky Girl

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean [Volumes 12-17]
Hirohiko Araki
⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wrongly convicted of a crime she did not commit, Kujo Joline finds herself locked up in Green Dolphin Penitentiary, a high security establishment. On site, she discovers a ruthless universe where the law of the strongest reigns and where trust is a luxury that one cannot afford. Fortunately, the strange medallion sent to her by her father awakens in her a mysterious force that may allow her to escape!

Self-Portrait with Nothing

Aimee Pokwatka
⭐⭐⭐

If a picture paints a thousand worlds…

Abandoned as an infant on the local veterinarian’s front porch, Pepper Rafferty was raised by two loving mothers, and now at thirty-six is married to the stable, supportive Ike. She’s never told anyone that at fifteen she discovered the identity of her biological mother.

That’s because her birth mother is Ula Frost, a reclusive painter famous for the outrageous claims that her portraits summon their subjects’ doppelgangers from parallel universes.

Researching the rumors, Pepper couldn’t help but wonder:
Was there a parallel universe in which she was more confident, more accomplished, better able to accept love?
A universe in which Ula decided she was worth keeping?
A universe in which Ula’s rejection didn’t still hurt too much to share?

Sometimes living our best life means embracing the imperfect one we already have…

Dead Witch Walking

Dead Witch Walking
Kim Harrison
⭐⭐⭐

All the creatures of the night gather in “the Hollows” of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party… and to feed.

Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining – and it’s Rachel Morgan’s job to keep that world civilized.

A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she’ll bring ’em back alive, dead… or undead.

O Caledonia

O Caledonia
Elspeth Barker
⭐⭐⭐

In the tradition of Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle, a darkly humorous modern classic of Scottish literature about a doomed adolescent growing up in the mid-20th century—featuring a new introduction by Maggie O’Farrell, award-winning author of Hamnet.

Janet lies murdered beneath the castle stairs, attired in her mother’s black lace wedding dress, lamented only by her pet jackdaw…

Author Elspeth Barker masterfully evokes the harsh climate of Scotland in this atmospheric gothic tale that has been compared to the works of the Brontës, Edgar Allan Poe, and Edward Gorey. Immersed in a world of isolation and loneliness, Barker’s ill-fated young heroine Janet turns to literature, nature, and her Aunt Lila, who offers brief flashes of respite in an otherwise foreboding life. People, birds, and beasts move through the background in a tale that is as rich and atmospheric as it is witty and mordant. The family’s motto—Moriens sed Invictus (Dying but Unconquered)—is a well-suited epitaph for wild and courageous Janet, whose fierce determination to remain steadfastly herself makes her one of the most unforgettable protagonists in contemporary literature.
