My Desk Essentials - Sincerely Julie Anna

While a cluttered desk or workspace can become overwhelming very quickly, there are many supplies that I find helpful when getting work done. These essential supplies have been with me throughout high school, college, and work, and perhaps they will become a part of your regular workspace as well if you haven’t incorporated them already!

1. A Planner Or Notebook
At the moment, I have a separate notebook for work-related tasks. In school, however, I had everything together, from assignments and tests to chores that needed to be done, and even outings with friends.

At work, I have a scratch notebook, for a few reasons. For one, it’s great to have a running to-do list. Not only are you more likely to finish tasks that you write down, but you can also look back and refer to your progress of what you’ve been working on. At my current job, I use my to-do lists to track how quickly I’ve tackled problems and where I can make improvements. I also use it as a reference if I need to remember the last time a task was completed.

Notebooks are also great for side notes. I like to date the top of each page for reference, and its contents can be numerous. While on calls, I have a small notebook that I use to jot down ideas and concepts, topics to research, and tasks I have been assigned. Sometimes I am assigned lots of little tasks, and my notebook helps me remember each one. I will also write down pieces of advice my co-workers give me, as I think these are great bits of information to stumble on when referring back.

2. Sticky Notes
While I have my notebooks for larger-scale thoughts and tasks, I like to have more urgent tasks written on a sticky note. These make for quick reference, and can be stored where needed once I no longer need it on my desk. My roommate in college would use sticky notes to make a timetable of her day, and I adapted this from her when I felt I had a lot of tasks to complete in a day. Once completed, it would be stuck in my planner on my to-do list.

Although you can cut your sticky notes to achieve the same effect, I like to keep page flags around to mark my planner or highlight certain tasks. They can also be a useful tool to mark pages in novels or journals.

3. A Bottle of Water and a Snack
Even when working at home, I like to have something to eat and drink within reach – usually some almonds and water for a nice boost of energy. Otherwise, having to leave my desk would serve as a distraction. Having something right there keeps me focused and ensures I’m eating and drinking enough throughout the day.

4. Positive Affirmations and Accomplishments
When you’re having trouble with an assignment, feeling unmotivated, or even incapable, it helps me to have reminders stored that push me to keep going and keep me in a positive mindset. Not the generic “You can do it!” type notes, but something a little more personalized. If there is a quote from one of my readings that really spoke to me, I’ll include that. Better yet, any experiences that remind me how others believe that I am accomplished and capable are included. My most helpful reminders are experiences based on other people who felt that I was very capable and successful. Have you ever earned a competitive reward based on your achievements? Received positive feedback at work? Obtained recognition for your work? Keep these things written down – they may be a prime source of motivation for you later.

5. Plenty of Light
It can be difficult to work in a dark space. Not having the right amount of light can drain you, and having nothing but a bright screen staring at you can be hard on your vision. If you can, try to work near sunlight. If not, desk lamps – especially with full-spectrum bulbs installed – can be helpful in making your workspace brighter and easier to work at. Keep in mind, however, that there is a delicate balance – I’ve had computer vision syndrome symptoms just as bad when I worked near too much light. Find a balance that works best for you.

I hope this short list inspired you! What are your desk essentials? Do we have a lot in common? Be sure to let me know.

Sincerely,

Julie Anna x
