Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you’ll be kicking off 2021 with some good reads this month.
Not to be a broken record or anything, but my TBR is packed again. I made some plans to read certain books in January because I figured they’d be good Winter reads. I then planned out some anticipated books, some of which I received ARCs for, and well…we know how that goes.
So technically I have 11 books on my TBR. I don’t expect to read all of them at all, but if I have the time to, I’d love to try!
Anyway, here’s what I’m reading this January:
Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters
Detransition, Baby follows three women, cisgender and transgender, whose lives change after an unexpected pregnancy. After Reese’s significant other Ames detransitions, Reese finds herself coping with her loneiness by sleeping with married men. Ames, with the loss of his relationship with Reese after detransitioning, wants to find a way back to her. When Ames finds out his boss and lover Katrina is pregnant, Ames wonders if this is his chance for Reese to return to his life – and the three of them to be together.
I came across this book while looking at 2021 releases and I think this will be a really interesting one. There are so many layered topics that are going to be explored in this book and I’m really curious to see the amount of detail and discussion that goes into it.
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and the One Ring, possessed by Sauron, enabled him to rule above all others. But one day the One Ring was taken from him, and many years later it fell into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. This story explores Bilbo’s journey across Middle Earth to destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.
I have yet to read or watch this series, so I am really excited for it. This is where my TBR gets big because I’d like to attempt to read all of the books in the month. However, I have a feeling that’s probably not going to happen, so I’m not going to push it.
Difficult Women by Roxane Gay
Difficult Women is a collection of stories about the lives of many women who live unconventional lives. This book explores the lives of these women and how their experiences and traumas shaped them into both who they are now and the lives that they live today.
This is the Feminist Book Club pick for January. I’ve been looking at books that cover similar topics to read, so this pick came at the right time. I also have yet to read a book by Roxane Gay, so I’m looking forward to reading one of her books for the first time, as well the discussion for this one.
The Project by Courtney Summers
The Project follows Lo Denham, who goes to live with her great aunt after the death of her parents and after her sister Bea joins The Unity Project. The Unity Project has won the hearts of many for its charitable actions, but Lo knows there’s more than meets the eye. And when a man shows up claiming that The Unity Project killed his son, Lo has the perfect opportunity to expose The Unity Project and reunite with her sister.
I was able to get a Read Now copy of this ARC on NetGalley, and I’m definitely excited to dive into this one. I read Sadie by the same author when it came out and loved it, so when I saw this book coming out I knew I had to read it too. There’s so many mysteries to uncover in the synopsis alone and I can’t wait to see what the book has to offer.
Crown Chasers by Rebecca Coffindaffer
Crown Chasers follows Alyssa Farshot, who’s tried her whole life to outrun her family legacy of being next in line for the throne. But when Alyssa’s uncle becomes gravely ill, Alyssa finds out she’s not next in line – instead, he calls for the first crownchase in seven centuries, and the first to find the royal seal earns the throne. Alyssa’s duty to her uncle compels her to take part in the chase, but once the chase turns deadly, she realizes more than just the empire is at stake.
This book was in the October Beacon Book Box, and I have yet to read it! I love a good sci-fi book and this one sounds like it’ll be a fast-paced, fun read.
The Afterlife of the Party by Marlene Perez
This book follows Tansy, who is dragged to a party in Hollywood Hills by her best friend Skyler, and leaves one as a vampire. Now her and Skyler are stuck on the road as groupies with a band of vampires. But when the girls find themselves within a vampire war, will Tansy be able to save her friends?
I received an e-ARC of this book from Entangled Teen. This book has vampires and sounds like it’s going to be all sorts of crazy and I am so ready for it. Lately I want to read more vampire books and this one seems like a great fit!
Shades of Darkness by N.K. Leem
The execution is in two weeks, and without his allies, it seems impossible to Thaleon that he will be able to stop it. But Thaleon will continue onward to Varle, even if it means death for him. Dawyn is in disbelief that Thaleon is still alive, and believing that he was taken captive, embarks on a quest to find him. But the Crown is searching for Thaleon, and the both of them will be killed if anyone finds out about his plans to help him.
I’m on the ARC team for the release of this book. Ever since I read the third book in this series, I’ve been dying to know what happens next. I have a feeling this book is going to be another page turner!
What books are you kicking off the new year with? Additionally, have you read or are planning to read any of these books? I’d love to hear your thoughts on them!

My Go-To Bookstagram Props
One of the most fun aspects of taking bookish pictures for me is experimenting with different ideas. There are so many ways to make a Bookstagram photo your own, using a variety of editing tools, backdrops, and of course, props! But at the end of the day, there’s always a few Bookstagram props I almost always rely on. So today I’m sharing some of my go-to Bookstagram props, plus some more seasonal ones, and where I found them. I hope this provides some inspiration for some of your Bookstagram pictures as well!
August 2021 TBR
July has come to an end, so it's time to share my August TBR! I can't believe we're already so far into summer. This month's TBR comes with a mix of a few things! I have some ARCS in the queue that will be releasing this month. And after that, I essentially plan on...
July 2021 Wrap-up
With July over, it’s time to share my reading wrap-up. This past month, I read nine books. I did get diverted from my TBR just a bit since I had so many books I was carrying over from June. It was a bit mixed this month in terms of what I read as well, but I can’t complain because I read some really amazing books as well!
I hope you have a wonderful month of reading! I read The Lord of the Rings trilogy a few years ago and enjoyed it tremendously but book two is….notoriously long. I vividly remember sitting on vacation in Canada in the middle of the woods and wondering if I would ever get through a certain section. But, if I can do it, you can do it!
Have a Happy New Year and a wonderful January!
Thank you! I’m especially looking forward to reading it after hearing so much love for it – although I will keep that in mind for book two! Happy New Year to you, too! 🖤
Thank you! I’ve heard that about the second book. Sadly I wasn’t able to read them this month but I definitely want to read them this winter so I’d like to do so next month!
