Synopsis

Finding work is easy. Staying alive is a little bit harder.

When Russ Wesley finds an unusual artifact in his grandfather’s collection of rare antiquities, the last thing he expects is for it to draw the attention of a ferocious alien from a distant planet. Equally surprising is the adventurous team of intergalactic exterminators dispatched to deal with the alien threat. They’re a little wild, and a little reckless. Worse yet, they’re so impressed with Russ’s marksmanship that they insist he join their squad . . . whether he wants to or not.

About the Author

Ash Bishop is a lifetime reader and a lifetime nerd, loving all things science fiction and fantasy. He has been a high school English teacher, and worked in the video game industry, as well as in educational app development. Bishop currently produces script coverage for a major Hollywood studio, but he spends his best days at home in Southern California with his wonderful wife and two wonderful children. He earned an MFA in Creative Writing from San Diego State University.

Review

Intergalactic Exterminators, Inc, while being branded as a science fiction novel, turned out to be a lot more than what the synopsis describes. Taking place partially on Earth and partially beyond, we follow characters Russ and Nina and how their lives change by Russ’s grandfather’s antiques. But not only that, it’s also a story about a family bookstore and oddities shop struggling to stay afloat, another family who struggles to care for a family member, and all of the other stories that bring this small town together.

That being said, this book has what I’d describe as a cozy mystery vibe to it. You’ve got a small town atmosphere, some quirky, fun dialogue, and not as much of a dark tone. But then, of course, you have the aliens – and the combination of these elements made this book really interesting. While I could have gotten a little more out of the characters in this book, their emotional ties to staying involved in training and work had me invested in finding out how their futures would pan out.

I also thought the concept of the exterminators was really interesting. I’ve watched so much sci-fi (*cough*, Star Trek) where newly discovered planets aren’t always left alone? So it was really cool to see how that concept was explored more thoroughly in this book.

Intergalactic Exterminators, Inc. is a great fit for those who enjoy sci-fi, but are looking for something with a bit of a lighter mood or don’t want something too dense in worldbuilding. I’d love to read more about this world if the author decides to make it a series!
