Happy Wednesday, and happy March!
Last week completed my first ever read of LOTR, and I’m so glad I finally read it! I’ve also been reading lots of great books in general. I hope you’ve been finding lots of great reads, too!
I’m so excited about all the books I’m reading in March, too. I can’t wait to get to them all!
Currently Reading:
The Final Revival of Opal and Nev by Dawnie Walton
This book follows rock duo Opal Jewel and Neville Charles, and the story of their rise to fame. But a chain of disastorous events begins when a rival band under their label brandishes a Confederate flag at their concert; a constant reminder of the issues Opal will continue to face as a Black woman in the music industry. Decades later, music journalist S. Sunny Shelton has the oppportunity to write their oral history when a huge allegation threatens to change everything.
I’ve been absolutely loving the writing of this novel so far. The way the author ties in the characters with music history feels so authentic, in addition to the characters themselves. I’m about halfway through this book, and I look forward to seeing how the story continues.
Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers
Honey Girl follows Grace, who goes on a girls trip to Vegas after getting her PhD in astronomy. She’s a hard worker and a high acheiver, yet she doesn’t feel very fulfilled after completing her degree. She’s also the last person to think she would get drunk and marry a woman she just met, until she does just that. And after struggling with her father’s expectations and feelings of burnout, Grace flees to New York with her wife, only to face what she’s been running from all along.
I feel like I don’t read this genre too too often, but I liked the synopsis and have been hearing so much love for it! I’m about a third of the way through the book and I’ve been enjoying it so far. I really like all of the discussions around finding yourself and who you want to be (and everything that comes with navigating your twenties).
Recently Read:
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and the One Ring, possessed by Sauron, enabled him to rule above all others. But one day the One Ring was taken from him, and many years later it fell into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. This story explores Bilbo’s journey across Middle Earth to destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.
I completed The Return of the King, thus finishing my first read of LOTR (for now)! Pretty soon I will be reading The Silmarillon as well. Overall, I really loved the detail that went into the books, especially regarding the worldbuilding and how expansive it was. Despite this, I do still think The Hobbit was my favorite!
Up Next:
The Conductors by Nicole Glover
The Conductors follows Hetty Rhodes, a former conductor on the Underground Railroad with the help of her wits and magic. After the Civil War, she and her husband Benjy settle down in Pennsylvania where they solve murder mysteries. But when they find their friend slain in an alley and are off to find answers, only to find that those answers lie in the ugly truths they must face around them.
I really love books that mesh genres, so I’m excited to see what this book has in store. There are so many questions I have already about the characters, and I look forward to learning more about their stories!

I’ve heard Opal and Nev is very good. Hope you enjoy it! Happy reading 😊
Thank you! It’s really good so far!
I’m glad you got to LOTR. I, too, have been meaning to read the books. I’ve never read nor watched Tolkien, although I have the three LOTR movies because I got them for $1.99 each years ago during a Black Friday sale.
That’s a great deal! I haven’t watched the films either, but now that I’ve read the books I’d love to watch the movies.
I’m with you, The Hobbit has remained my favourite as well. I’m floored and envious of how quickly you read through all of LOTR. It took my so long to get through all three of them, I wish I could’ve read them at that pace. Have a great week!

Thank you! I’ve had them on my shelves since October and I’ve been so antsy to read them, so I’m sure that was a big part of my binge!
I admire you for finishing LoTR. I love the movies, but couldn’t get through the books – so much description!
It definitely was a ton of description! Sometimes I really crave that kind of writing and now was definitely one of those times.
I am curious about Honey Girl. Enjoy your books and your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.
I don’t read contemporary romances often but I enjoyed it nonetheless! Enjoy your week!
I look forward to the honey girl! here’s my post: https://thebibliophilicworld.wordpress.com/2021/03/03/www-wednesdays-03-03-2021/
I just finished it and enjoyed it! I hope you enjoy it too.
Congrats on reading all of The Lord of the Rings, amazing author! Have you ever read George MacDonald? You can see how much he influenced both Tolkien and CS Lewis – for instance in Lilith.
My library recently had a zoom about how quilts designs gave secret messages how to find safe places and directions to flee to Canada through the Underground Railroad. It was so so fascinating
Thank you! I haven’t read his works yet – but I’d love to read about Tolkien’s influences and dive deeper soon!
That’s really interesting! I love that your library provides educational information like that virtually.
I’m glad to hear you are enjoying Honey Girl so far! I hope you will enjoy your books this week and happy reading. xx
Thank you! I just finished it and enjoyed it 🙂
It’s been years since we read LOTR!
I regret not reading it sooner!
I could not agree more with your feeling about LOTR! I admit I struggled with the second book – why were the Ents so fantastic in the movie and so boring in the book?? – but the whole experience was worth it. Still, the Hobbit has my heart. Enjoy your week!
Thank you! The Hobbit is my favorite as well. I still need to watch the movies though – can’t wait for that!
