I’ve been enjoying so many great books this month – I hope it’s been the same for you! The weather’s been nice again here as well so that means lots more outdoor reading.
Currently Reading:
Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
Before the Coffee Gets Cold takes place in a small cafe in Japan that has been serving coffee for over a hundred years, plus the opportunity to travel to the past. The story follows four characters who take up the cafe’s orders. However, the cafe works under several conditions: customers must sit in the same seat, they must not leave the cafe, and they must return to the present before the coffee gets cold.
This book has been on my radar for some time now, and after finding out Emma from Words and Peace was reading it too she invited me to do a buddy read. This is definitely picking up for me! We’re starting to notice how the theatrical elements of this book as well, which I’m really enjoying.
These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong
These Violent Delights is a Romeo and Juliet retelling that takes place in 1926 Shanghai. It follows Juliette Cai, a former flapper who resumes her role as heir of the Scarlet Gang. Their only rivals are the White Flowers, whose heir, Roma Montagov, was Juliette’s first love and betrayal. But as both gangs become unstable and the death toll climbs, Juliette and Roma must put their grudges aside and work together before the city they compete for crumbles before their eyes.
I should be finishing this today! I’m really enjoying this book and all of the elements that tie into the main plot. This may end up being one of my favorite retellings as well!
Recently Read:
Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro
Klara and the Sun is a story that follows Klara, an Artificial Friend. She spends her days in the store watching those who browse, as well as observing those who pass on the streets outside. She hopes that someday, someone will choose her.
While I wish we got more background into the elements of the dystopian elements of this society, I did enjoy this book overall! I liked how this story was told through Klara’s perspective and how her understanding of the world around her framed the book as a whole.
Last Call by Elon Green
Last Call tells the true story of The Last Call killer, a serial killer in New York City in the 80’s and 90’s whose victims were gay men. He had all of the traits resembling even the most notorious serial killers, but because of the sexual orientation of his victims and the high murder rates at the time, the crimes he committed were nearly forgotten. Last Call details both the decades-long search for the killer, and tells the story of the victims and the community that surrounded them.
While I wish there was more detail in some places than others, this book hit the must-read category for me. I was frustrated by how many systems went out of their way to bypass the investigation of hate crimes but also wasn’t surprised given its persistence to many marginalized groups to this day. Regardless, I think knowing about these instances and how recent they are (in addition to how under the radar they are) make it a must-read.

Here Comes the Sun by Nicole Dennis-Benn
Here Comes the Sun is a story set in Jamaica following Margot, who is sending her younger sister to school in order for her to avoid the same fate that Margot had. When plans for a new hotel threaten their village, Margot sees it as not only an opportunity for financial independence, but also to admit her love for another woman. With the struggles that women in their community continue to face, each of them must face their own past in order pave their own paths to freedom.
I was hoping to start this book earlier, but better late than never! I’m hoping to join the book club meeting for this one as well if I’m able to do so in time (which I should be!).
