Synopsis

Disability Visibility is a collection of contemporary essays written from the lens of disabled voices. It features the everyday lives of the disability community while exploring the community’s past, its present, and its future.

Review

Although I can’t say I’ve read a ton of anthologies, Disability Visibility is one of the best I’ve read thus far. It combines a wide range of perspectives and voices that encompass the daily lives of disabled people. This is a collection I’d highly recommend whether you’re looking to learn more about the community, or if you’re a part of it.

With all anthologies or short story collections, I always find the best way to read them is to read one or two at a time and take some time to reflect after each one. I highly recommend doing the same for Disability Visibility. While each essay is written by different authors and thus has a different voice, they are all as equally powerful in the messages they share. They also range in content and structure – from personal accounts to TED Talks to statements to the U.S. Senate and more.

Something that I especially loved seeing throughout Disability Visibility was the stories about disabled joy. Oftentimes we do not as often get to hear the stories of joy from marginalized groups, so I’m glad this collection included these stories, as well as the stories that are about uplifting others within the community.

I also appreciated the inclusion of content warnings throughout this book. For each essay, content notes are included at the top of the page for those who may need to skip an essay or need to be warned of particular types of content going in.

Disability Visibility is a collection I’m very glad to have read and own on my shelves. It’s an anthology that I highly recommend to everyone, but I think would be a great starting point for those wanting to learn more about the disability community.
