New month, new books! I have a lot of books I’m really excited to read this month (and potentially too many, as always) so I’m trying to get a good head start this week. Here’s everything I’m reading!
Currently Reading:
Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron
It’s been 200 years since Cinderella found her prince, but since then, things have changed. Teen girls are now required to attend the Annual ball where men choose a suitor. But those who are not chosen from are never heard from again. This story follows Sophia, who would rather marry her childhood best friend, and flees the ball. During her escape, she encounters one of Cinderella’s descendants – and together they attempt to bring down the kingdom.
I’m not too far into this book yet, but so far it’s already super interesting! I find myself wanting to know what Sophia is going to do at the ball and what all of the tensions in the village is going to lead up to. Some aspects of this world I haven’t fully grasped yet, but I do think they will be explained more very soon.
Uhura’s Song by Janet Kagan
This Star Trek tie-in novel follows Uhura, who many years ago befriended a diplomat from the planet Eeaiuo, and exchanged forbidden songs and secrets. Now the Eeaiuoans are suffering from a plague, and the Enterprise is on its way to save them. Uhura’s songs might be the key to ending the plague, but within the song lies mysteries that the Enterprise must resolve first.
I’m halfway through this book so far and I was expecting Uhura to be much more of the main character than a side character! But aside from that, I am enjoying how the Enterprise crew and the Eeuoians are learning more about each other, but overall I’m feeling a bit mixed on this book.
Recently Read:
Daughters of Smoke and Fire by Ava Homa
Daughters of Smoke and Fire is the first novel published in English by a Kurdish writer. This debut novel follows Leila, who dreams of making films to show the stories of the oppressed lives of the Kurds. Her brother Chia becomes an activist as well because of their father’s wrongful imprisonment and torture, but one day this leads to him going missing. Leila sets out to find out what happened to him and where he’s gone, but after posting Chia’s writings, she finds herself in danger too.
This book was incredible, and I definitely will be recommending it for a long time! Ava Homa’s writing is beautiful, and she ties in every detail and image into the overall story and themes in some way. This book also explores the stories of Kurdish oppression, which is something unknown to so many people despite it going on for so many years. Again, I highly recommend this book!
Up Next:
Forest of Souls by Lori M. Lee
Forest of Souls is a YA fantasy that follows Sirscha, who is training to be the queen’s next royal spy. But after Sirscha’s best friend Saengo is killed by shamans, and Sirscha restores Saengo’s life, she is known as the first soulguide in living memory. Now, Sirscha is summoned as the only person who can confront the Spider King, and in that time it is up to her to master her new abilities to bring peace back to the kingdoms before it is too late.
I predict that my library hold of this book will be in pretty soon, so I think this will be next! This book has been on my radar for several months now and I’ve heard so many great things about it. I’ve been loving fantasies lately as well so it’ll be good to pick up another one this month.
That’s all for this week’s WWW Wednesday. Leave a comment if you participated this week too so I can read your post – or let me know what you’re currently reading below!

I really need to try a Star Trek novel. I’ve watched every tv show and movie of the original as well as the many spin offs but I’ve never read a book. It sounds intriguing. Happy reading ❤️
I didn’t know you watched Star Trek! I’m just starting the tie-in novels – they definitely read like a TV episode and they’re pretty interesting if you want to spend more time with the characters. A big portion of them are not a part of the canon, but I have trouble keeping up with the canon as it is 😅
My biggest fangirl kind of moment was when the actress Suzi Plakson, who played many roles on many different Star Trek spinoffs (the one I remember most was Worf’s mate on Next Generation), sent me a piece of pottery she made as thank you for reviewing a book that she wrote. So cool 😊🤗❤️
That’s so incredible and so thoughtful of her to do! Wow 😍
I’ve been really intrigued by Cinderella is Dead and The Forest of Souls! I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts about them when you’re finished! 😊
Here’s my WWW Wednesday! Happy reading!
Thank you! I can’t wait to finish them both!
The covers and titles are enticing! Thanks for sharing, and enjoy. Here’s MY WWW POST
Thank you! It was definitely an interesting week for books.
So strange that Uhura would be side-lined in a book with her name in the title. You’d think a tie-in novel would be perfect for giving more focus to series regulars who get less attention than the likes of Kirk and Spock. Granted, I don’t actually know how much attention she’s given in the original series, I’ve not properly watched it. Hope it picks up more for you before it’s done. Happy reading!

Thank you! Yeah, it’s a bit weird. She did get a decent amount of attention in TOS because she was a part of the bridge crew, but not as much as Kirk, Bones, and Spock. I’m sure there’s other books about her though – I’m a bit intimidated by how many TOS books there are, let alone for the whole Star Trek Universe!
Oooh Daughter of Smoke and Bone sounds super interesting! I just added it to my TBR!
Yes! I hope you love it. It’s definitely one of my favorites this year and I hope for the same for you! <3
I’m so happy you’re enjoying Cinderella is Dead! I really, really loved it. Great post!
