WWW Wednesday is a tag currently hosted at Taking on A World of Words. The three W’s are:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?
I’ve still been reading quite a bit lately – I have a lot of books I want to get to very soon! I also may have bought a lot of books recently and I don’t want my TBR to pile up again, so I’m trying to read new books as I go.
Also, I think I’ve heard the most commentary regarding my not-so-great experience with Emma than I ever have when any other book I’ve read. I promise I will give Jane Austen another try! I’m going to pick up Northanger Abbey from the recommendations of several people here and on Bookstagram (and in person!) based on my tastes in classics. At least I will eventually! But in the meantime, here’s what I’m currently reading:
Currently Reading:
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Mexican Gothic follows Noemí, who is sent a mysterious letter from her newly wed cousin that she is in danger. This letter summons her to High Place, a mysterious and distant house in the Mexican countryside – and Noemí finds herself in an unfamilar place that will be difficult to leave behind.
There is a chance that I’ve finished this book by the time you’re reading this! This book is so good; I can’t put it down. I got my copy from the library and I’d love to buy one so I can re-read it, but it seems to be sold out for now. I will keep checking!
Recently Read:
Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust
Girl, Serpent, Thorn is a recently released YA fantasy novel. Based on Persian mythology, this story follows Soraya, a princess who carries a curse – she poisons others with her touch. On the surface, there is a man who is unafraid of her power. And below the surface, there is a demon that may know how to lift her curse. As the day of her brother’s wedding approaches, she must decide whether to step out in the open for the first time – and the choices she makes leads to consequences she would have never imagined.
This book reminded me how much I miss retellings. This definitely has me interested in Persian mythology and the original texts it is a retelling of as well. I’m glad I picked it up.

Vox by Christina Dalcher
Vox is a dystopian novel that primarily follows Dr. Jean McClellan and her family. In the United States, women are only allowed to speak 100 words a day. After the long-term denial of these changes, Jean must find a way to reclaim her voice and undo the wrongdoings that have been brought upon women across the nation.
I really liked the premise for this book, but sadly I don’t think the story was fleshed out all that well. It has a lot of really great points about the dangers of remaining silent and not staying current with what’s going on, as well as the impacts of the dystopian world on their youth. I liked the concept, I just think it could have been executed a lot better.

Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni-Eddo Lodge
Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race started as a blog post where the author wrote about her frustrations with the discussion of race in Britain and how it is commonly led by people unaffected by racism. This book provides the reader with information on how to identify and counter racism.
I finally have my copy of this book, so I’m going to start reading it today. In addition to this being an essential read, I’m looking forward to the author’s discussions on intersectionality. I feel like this is a topic that’s so badly glossed over in non-fiction, and I’d like to be more intentional about considering intersectionality in my anti-racist reads, and doing better about reading feminist books that consider intersectionality in the future.
That’s all for this week’s WWW Wednesday. Leave a comment if you participated this week too so I can read your post – or let me know what you’re currently reading below!

I’ve heard so many good things about Mexican Gothic. Glad you enjoyed it so much. Happy reading! ❤️
Thank you Tessa! 🖤
I have three more books I want to get through this month and Mexican Gothic is def on that list!! Also, I don’t even read YA fantasy that much but Girl, Serpent, Thorn is really intriguing me.
Yes, I hope you get to it soon! And yeah, I haven’t been reading YA in general much at all earlier this year but there’s a lot of good books coming out!
Oh, also here’s my WWW! https://dearbookshelves.wordpress.com/2020/07/22/www-wednesday-july-22-2020/
I really want to get my hands on Girl, Serpent, Thorn. I’ve seen such interesting reviews 🙂
Happy reading!
Here’s my WWW Wednesday post.
Yes! It was a really unique retelling. Enjoy 🙂
I’m happy to hear Mexican Gothic is so hard to put down. Is there any supernatural element to it, or does the Gothic horror come more from setting and other people? I hope that’s not too spoiler-y of a question. Have a great week!
I’d actually say it’s a little bit of both! The setting and the house itself play into the Gothic horror element of it, but pretty early on you find out about people who have died on the premises (and there’s a graveyard on the property) so that plays into it as well. It is definitely very strongly Gothic horror though!
I have added Mexican Gothic to my TBR and I cannot wait to get my hands on it.
Yay! I hope you can get it soon!
