Currently Reading:
Emma by Jane Austen
This is a classic novel that follows the always-meddling Emma and her tendency to play matchmaker for the people in her village – even if its exactly what gets her into trouble.
While I like this book more than Pride and Prejudice so far, I’m only on chapter 6 and I started this two weeks ago. I’d like to finish this this month if I can, but there are so many other books I also want to read at the moment.
Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
Invisible Man is a modern classic first published in 1952. It follows the narrator’s journey through the racial divide as he ventures from pursuing an education in the Deep South to pursuing a living in the heart of New York City.
I’m more than halfway through this book so far, and the only reason I haven’t read more at this point is because I read this one before bed and am too tired to read further! Despite it being written from the fifties, so many of the discussions surrounding racism are still so prevalent today.
Tin Man by Sarah Winman
Tin Man follows Ellis and Michael, who befriend each other at twelve years old. The two grow to become close friends, but one day, their friendship becomes something more. But ten years later, a very different outcome occurs – Ellis is married, and Michael is missing. This story covers what happens in those ten years.
I was recommended this book by @whisperedletters on Instagram – it’s one of his favorite books, and I’ve heard so many good things about it as well. I’m not too far into this book, but I have a feeling I’ll be finishing it over the next day or so.
Recently Read:
Star Trek: A Choice of Catastrophes by Michael Schuster
A Choice of Catastrophes is a Star Trek Original Series novel. It primarily follows Dr. McCoy on the return from a supply delivery when things on The Enterprise go awry. Between power failures and medical emergencies, the crew must get to the bottom of it for the life of the Enterprise and everyone on it.
Overall, I wasn’t super impressed with this story. It very much has a plot that centers around character development, and yet I didn’t feel like the characters drove the story overall. Despite this, I’m very much still looking forward to reading more of the Star Trek books currently on my shelves.
Up Next:
A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow
A Song Below Water follows a Tavia, a siren who has to keep her identity under wraps as she lives in Portland, Oregon. With her best friend Effie, they navigate high school life together. That is, until the tensions escalate for Tavia, Effie, and many around the country with the aftermath of a siren murder trial.
I’ve seen this book a lot around book blogs in the last couple months, and this past week on Instagram as well. I’ve had this on hold at my library and I just happened to get my hold as I’m writing this post, so the decision on what to read next was made easy!
That’s all for this week’s WWW Wednesday. Leave a comment if you participated this week too so I can read your post – or let me know what you’re currently reading below!
I’ve read both Emma and Invisible Man – great books! Happy reading!
Thank you! I’m looking forward to reading more of both of them 🙂
I’ve been wondering whether I’d like A Song Below Water after seeing it around so much! It has such a striking cover. Here’s hoping you enjoy it!
Here’s my WWW post!
Thank you! I’m looking forward to picking it up soon.
I feel like I should reread Invisible Man. I first read it in college, back in the 60s.
I thought I had read Tin Man, but according to Goodreads, no. I probably planned to read it. Thanks for sharing, and here’s MY WWW POST
I think that would make for a good re-read! If not that he also has other books I’m very interested in. Happy reading!
Julie Anna, I hope you continue to enjoy Emma as I love it and recently re-read it. Take care and happy reading! 🙂
Thnank you! I’m having a bit of trouble balancing three books at once but I am looking forward to continuing with it. 🙂
I always feel like I haven’t read nearly as much Austen as I should have, considering how many Victorian literature courses I took in university. Is it weird that I’ve only read Northanger Abbey? A Song Below Water sounds like an interesting twist on a common idea too (mythical being in modern times). Hope you have a great week!
