It’s been a while, hasn’t it! I haven’t posted a WWW Wednesday in a few weeks. Work has been kind of crazy, and I’ve had virtually no time for anything else. I think things are cooling down again though, and I’m really happy to be back to the blog! 

Since it’s been a few weeks I’ll only talk about my most recent read, and then in future weeks I’ll be hopefully back to normal. This week I have a few more books I’m hoping to read before the end of the year – we’ll see if it’s doable!

Currently Reading:

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevski

Crime and Punishment follows Raskolnikov, a former student who commits a random murder in St. Petersburg without regret. This changes when he begins to be pursued by a suspicious police investigator and finds the voice of his own conscience growing on him. There is only one person who can offer Raskolnikov redemption.

I’m about halfway through this book. After reading a bunch of shorter classics, I’m really enjoying diving into a longer one where the story is much more drawn out. There are also some interesting discussions on morality in this book and I like the way it’s taking the time to explore and discuss these things while weaving them into the story.

Conjure Women by Afia Atakora

Conjure Women is a story that takes place during the course of the American Civil War. It follows Miss May Belle, her daughter Rue, and her master’s daughter Varina. This story explores their bonds at the dawn of the Civil War, while the birth of an accursed child spreads fear among the townspeople.

I can’t say too much about this book as I just started it. I do really like the writing though and how the story was introduced. The tone and style of writing for the thirty pages I’ve read so far was really nicely done and I’m hoping the rest of the book is written in a similar way.

Shades of Darkness by N.K. Leem

The execution is in two weeks, and without his allies, it seems impossible to Thaleon that he will be able to stop it. But Thaleon will continue onward to Varle, even if it means death for him. Dawyn is in disbelief that Thaleon is still alive, and believing that he was taken captive, embarks on a quest to find him. But the Crown is searching for Thaleon, and the both of them will be killed if anyone finds out about his plans to help him.

I’m on the ARC team for this book, and I am so excited to kick off the new year with this one! Book three ended on such an exciting note for me, and I’ve been waiting all this time to find out what happens next. It definitely seems like it’ll be another page turner in the series and I’m definitely looking forward to that.
